7 epic days, 70+ miles, and 3,000-4,000 feet of elevation gain every day.
We decided to self-plan and self guide this trip, which made it even more exciting. We researched and booked all the accommodations and mapped the trails, and downloaded all the maps. We used All Trails maps which worked out great for us.

From Geneva, we took a shuttle transfer to Chamonix, a charming Alpine town that serves as the gateway to the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB).

Upon arrival, we checked into the RockyPop Chamonix-Les Houches, a familiar and lively spot where we’d stayed last year during our Mont Blanc climb. Walking through its welcoming doors, and lively atmosphere, the memories of 2023 came rushing back, and we spent the evening reminiscing over delicious pizza and laughter.

The town was abuzz with activity as the TMB ultramarathoners prepared to embark on their grueling journey. Watching them kick off their run filled us with admiration and excitement. Their determination and the electric atmosphere only fueled our own motivation for the days ahead.
We started the morning with a short cable car ride up to the Aiguille du Midi, marveling at the breathtaking views of Mont Blanc and its surrounding peaks. From there, we embarked on a warm-up hike to stretch our legs and acclimate to the altitude.

Later, we hopped on the scenic Montenvers Railway to visit the Ice Cave and Mer de Glace, enjoying a relaxed exploration that offered both awe and inspiration. The group’s energy was high as we soaked in the beauty and camaraderie. This gentle start to our trek allowed us to ease into the journey while soaking up the vibrant spirit of Chamonix. We stopped in the town for dinner before heading back.

Back at the RockyPop, we relived the day over wine, eagerly anticipating the first major hiking stage of the Tour du Mont Blanc the next day. It was clear: the adventure was only just beginning.

We started bright and early at 6 a.m., taking a short bus ride followed by a half an hour walk to the Bellevue cable car, which brought us to the trailhead. From there, our hike unfolded with stunning Alpine vistas at every turn.

As we climbed higher, Mont Blanc’s majestic snow-capped peaks came into clear view, their grandeur highlighted against the brilliant blue sky. Along the trail, we were thrilled to spot the Gouter Hut from our climb last year, a nostalgic reminder of our 2023 adventure. The shimmering glacier below seemed almost close enough to touch, and the rugged beauty of the surrounding mountains left us in awe.
For more experienced hikers, this route via Refuge de Miage is a must, offering unparalleled views of high mountain peaks and glaciers. We paused at the refuge for a warm lunch, savoring both the food and the serene surroundings before continuing our journey.

We arrived in Les Contamines by late afternoon and checked into La Ferme à Piron, a charming bed-and-breakfast located in the small hamlet of La Vy. Just 200 meters from the Tour du Mont Blanc trail, the farm is nestled 1 km from the center of Les Contamines-Montjoie towards Notre-Dame de la Gorge. Finding it was an adventure in itself, as we relied on Google Maps to navigate the scenic backroads.
La Ferme à Piron offered us a cozy retreat after a challenging day, and we were grateful for its warm hospitality and inviting atmosphere. Reflecting on the day’s journey, we couldn’t wait to see what the TMB had in store for us next.

The journey began early as we departed Les Contamines and made our way toward Col du Bonhomme. Along the way, we passed the charming Refuge Nant Borrant and Refuge de la Balme, picturesque spots nestled against a stunning mountain backdrop.
The climb to Col du Bonhomme was demanding, but the panoramic views made every step worthwhile. Towering peaks surrounded us, and the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the top was exhilarating. From there, we continued another 2 km to Refuge de la Croix du Bonhomme, where we paused for lunch.

The refuge offered delicious warm meals and treats, including a refreshing Belgian beer, pizza and homemade cake prepared by the friendly hosts. It was the perfect spot to recharge while taking in the awe-inspiring Alpine views. After lunch, we began the descent to Les Chapieux, a picturesque valley nestled deep in the mountains.

The descent, while shorter, required steady footing as we navigated the rugged terrain. Upon reaching Les Chapieux, we were greeted by the tranquil beauty of the valley. A pre-arranged transfer took us to Bourg-Saint-Maurice for our overnight stay at Hotel Base Camp Lodge, a modern and comfortable accommodation that provided all the amenities we needed to recover for the next stage of our journey. Here we were reunited with our two friends who took transfers.

Descending into Italy, we passed Rifugio Elisabetta, perched scenically on the mountainside. This was my favorite lunch spot and had surprisingly delicious gnocchi and ravioli dishes. We paused for a hearty lunch while soaking in the peaceful surroundings. Continuing along the Val Veny, we walked beside the crystalline waters of Lake Combal, surrounded by breathtaking peaks.

The low route in the valley guided us to the bus stop at La Visaille. A short 15-minute bus ride brought us to Courmayeur, a charming Italian resort town. Known for its alpine climbing history and vibrant atmosphere, Courmayeur provided the perfect mix of culture, elegance, and mountain charm.

Today was bittersweet, as one of our injured friends rejoined the group and did great for this hike while another, unable to continue, returned home from Geneva. A delightful twist came in the afternoon when our friend who had left for Geneva decided to rejoin us for the remaining stages of the hike. With the tunnel connecting Chamonix to Courmayeur closed, she made the daring journey by taking two cable cars over Mont Blanc. Her determination inspired us all as she tested her foot on a short local hike upon arrival.

We once again found ourselves debating whether to hike or take transport, and, true to our adventurous spirit, we chose to hike. The rain added an extra layer of excitement and serenity to our journey, transforming the Swiss landscape into a lush, misty wonderland.
This stage of the TMB took us from Champex to Trient through the main route, which climbs to Alp Bovine, a spot offering breathtaking views of the Martigny valley far below. The ascent was steady, challenging but not overwhelming, as we passed through scenic alpine pastures and dense forests. Luckily, the rain had stopped for us to enjoy the views. We had planned to have lunch at Alpage de Bovine but it was closed so we settled with our energy bars and trail snacks.

For those who seek an even greater challenge, an alternate route to the Fenêtre d’Arpette offers one of the TMB’s highest points at 8,743 feet (2,665 meters). Due to the weather conditions, we opted for the main route, which proved to be the perfect balance of effort and enjoyment.
An hour before descending into the town of Trient, we found a small establishment which served warm food. We were very hungry and we indulged into ordering 2 large plates of french fries and ice cream before climbing down.

Arriving in Trient, we checked into Hotel La Grande Ourse, where we stayed in a combination of both private rooms with shared bathrooms and dormitory accommodations. Here, we enjoyed a hearty dinner in the large and tastefully decorated communal dining area, sharing stories with fellow hikers about the day’s adventures.

This final stage offered more than we had anticipated. After a steady climb, we stopped for lunch at Refuge du Col de Balme, a fantastic refuge with stunning views of Mont Blanc and the surrounding peaks. The warm hospitality and breathtaking panoramas made it an ideal spot to rest and recharge.

Following lunch, we decided to add an extra challenge to our last day by climbing up to Aiguilette des Posettes. This ascent tested our endurance one final time, offering a sense of accomplishment as we reached the top. From there, the descent to Montroc was rocky and felt never-ending, but the striking views along the way kept our spirits high.

In Argentière, our private transfer awaited to take us back to Les Houches, where we collected our luggage at Rocky Pop Chamonix. We then drove to Geneva for the night’s stay. After a refreshing shower, we ventured into town for a celebratory Thai farewell dinner. The evening was filled with laughter and toasts, marking the end of our unforgettable adventure while celebrating the bonds of friendship forged along the trail.
