Valley of the Five Lakes: A Jasper National Park Gem

During our time in Jasper National Park, we hiked the Valley of the Five Lakes, a trail famous for its colorful lakes and serene forest surroundings. It was the perfect way to experience the beauty of Jasper on foot, and we even added the First Lake Trail to make the adventure even more special.

Trail Details:

  • Distance: ~5.5 miles (round trip, including First Lake Trail)
  • Elevation Gain: ~850 feet
  • Difficulty: Moderate

The trail begins with a gentle climb through a forest filled with wildflowers, offering plenty of shade and a peaceful atmosphere. Soon, the first (actually second) of the five lakes came into view—a small but sparkling body of water with hues of green and blue that hinted at the beauty to come.

Each of the five lakes has its own unique charm, ranging from deep emerald greens to bright turquoise blues. The water is so clear that we could see the pebbles on the bottom and the occasional fish darting around. We stopped at the third lake, our favorite, for a snack break and couldn’t resist dipping our toes into the cool glacial water.

After finishing the Five Lakes loop, we extended the hike by taking the First Lake Trail, a quieter path that offered a more secluded experience. This trail meanders through forested sections and open meadows before leading to a tranquil, less-visited lake. The reflections of the surrounding trees on the still water were mesmerizing, and it was the perfect spot to take in the beauty of Jasper in solitude.

What we loved most about this hike was the variety—it’s not just about the lakes. The trail also offers rolling hills, open spaces with mountain views, and occasional wildlife sightings (we spotted a curious squirrel and plenty of birds along the way).

The Valley of the Five Lakes is a great option for hikers of all levels, and adding the First Lake Trail makes it an even more rewarding experience. Whether you’re in Jasper for a few days or just passing through, this hike is a must-do for nature lovers.
